Wendy’s Co. (NASDAQ: WEN) is bringing back one of its hottest sellers and it’s all thanks to Chance the Rapper. The performer is apparently a big fan of the chain’s spicy chicken nuggets, which were discontinued in 2017. Last weekend, he tweeted: “Positive Affirmations for today: I WILL have a good day, I Will succeed today, Wendy’s WILL bring back spicy nuggets at some point please please Lord let it be today.”
Wendy’s social media team, known for its sharp Twitter game, immediately jumped on the opening. The team sent out a tweet saying: “Y’all keep asking, so here’s your chance. The people in charge say if you guys can get our tweet (this one right here) to 2 Million likes, they will bring SPICY CHICKEN NUGGETS BACK. Let’s freakin’ do this!”
The Twitterverse took the challenge seriously. In just a couple of days, the tweet reached its goal with over 2.1 million likes. The Wendy’s team touted the success with a tweet that said: “THIS IS NOT A DRILL! Spicy Chicken Nuggets are coming back! Y’all are crazy! That took like a day and a half! WHAT?! We don’t know when yet, gotta figure it out, but soon, and ok, LOSING IT RIGHT NOW THIS IS AMAZING!!”
It is unclear as to when the spicy nuggets would be making their official return. A spokesperson for the chain was unable to provide specific details. Fans are hoping that they will come back quickly.
This is not the first time Wendy’s has harnessed the power of social media to promote its products. Back in 2017, Wendy’s famously challenged teen Carter Wilkerson to get 18 million retweets to score free nuggets for a year. After Wilkerson dethroned Ellen DeGeneres’ tweet of a star-studded selfie from the 2014 Oscars, which previously held the record for the most retweets, Wendy’s said it would give him the free chicken nuggets, despite his not getting to 18 million. The company also pledged to donate $100,000 to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.
