Pizza Hut Making Changes To Nearly 40-year-old Recipe

Yum! Brands Inc.’s (NYSE: YUM) Pizza Hut brand is updating the recipe to its Original Pan Pizza, the most popular item on its menu. The announcement was made in a statement released by the national pizza chain. The announcement was surprising to many. The recipe for the Original Pan Pizza has remained unchanged since it was introduced in 1980.

The new recipe was developed through a process that lasted for three years. Some of the changes announced include a new blend of cheese and sauce that test subjects appeared to prefer during a taste test. The new recipe will also use a newly engineered pan to create a crispier crust

The updated Original Pan Pizza is available now at all stores nationwide for carryout, delivery, or dine-in. It has been added to the Everyday Low Price menu. The price is listed as $7.99 for a large, two-topping pizza when you order online. The toppings available to put on the Pan Pizza has not changed.

In a news release announcing the change, officials said the company reached the decision to update the recipe after a “lengthy innovation journey” that “focused on combining art, science and culinary expertise.” Penny Shaheen, Pizza Hut’s senior director of culinary innovation and strategy, said in the statement, “We’ve put a lot of energy and love into refining this beloved pizza and are eager for customers to taste the unbelievable difference first-hand.”

Pizza Hut has been coming up with a slew of new ideas and innovations in recent years. Most recently, the company has been testing a beer-delivery service, expanding its project to 300 stores in seven states earlier this year. The service is now available in Arizona, California, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Ohio. Pizza Hut says it plans to have the service in 1,000 stores by this summer.
